Key Facts

Detracking

  • Research has shown that heterogeneous classrooms benefit all students, even high achieving students.
  • One study found that 37 percent of the achievement gap between rich and poor students can be explained by academic tracking.

Harms of School SEGREGATION

  • "The results of this racial isolation and discrimination in schools are striking: only 22 percent of black Americans earns a college degree, as compared to 41 percent of the white population. Compared to white college graduates nationwide, black college graduates are twice as likely to be unemployed."

SCHOOL INTEGRATION

  • There is a large body of literature pointing to the numerous academic and social benefits of school integration. As one researcher argues, “diversity makes us smarter.”

School Consolidation

  • Across the country, 175 school districts have open desegregation cases.  Two segregated school districts in Mississippi were mandated to consolidate by the Mississippi legislature in 2013.  The result has been "a rare opportunity to reimagine desegregation" in the hopes that the newly formed district will narrow inequities and close racial gaps in education.
